Taranto, Italy

Kylix (bowl) of Laconian manufacture, attributed to the “Painter of the Taranto Fish”, attesting to the close links between Taranto and its parent country Sparta, located in the region of Laconia. The inside of the bowl features a composition of dolphins below the rim and tuna fish arranged in a radial pattern around a rosette in the centre. On the outside it is decorated with birds with long graceful necks turning to look behind them. The details of the figures are painted, incised and left unpainted on a pale engobe.
