Lacquer Plates with “Qian Li” Seal and Mother-of-pearl-inlay Figures and Landscapes

Yangzhou, China

Passed down from earlier generations, these two lacquer plates both feature figures and landscapes illustrated via mother-of-pearl inlay on the bottom with a black-lacquer foundation. The well-arranged rockeries, beautiful trees and flowers, elegant ladies, and misty floating clouds and moon create a fantastic visual effect as the nacre material shows different pearly iridescent colors with changes of life reflected on it. Also decorated with mother-of-pearl, its exterior bottom bears a square seal of two raised-line characters “qian li” meaning “one thousand miles”.
