Johann Joachim Kändler was appointed an assistant to Johann Gottlieb Kirchner at Meissen in 1731. After Kirchern’s departure, Kändler took over as Modellmeister, or modelling master. In addition to large commissions, from 1736 Kändler also worked on smaller figure groups. His originality and humour raised the genre to great heights.
