The shape of this oil lamp is typical for this period, and is influenced by ceramic lamps, which could either be placed on a stem, or hung. The hinged, ram-headed cover is unusual. The ram may have once had enameled eyes. The inscriptions flanking the cover are not readable, but they were probably meant to convey good wishes. Both body and spreading foot are decorated with incised animals and symbols. A bird finial is perched atop a joined circular and rectangular handle, and there are bosses at the sides that probably aided the hanging of the lamp by a string.
