According to myth, the Satyr Marsyas was bound to a tree before being flayed alive, his punishment for challenging Apollo in a music contest. This surprising choice of subject reflects an interest in the exotic that began in the Hellenistic period, when a monumental statue depicting Marsyas bound was created.
