Jjokji net, or scoop net, is a net that resembles a ladle with a long handle. A deep pocket-shaped net is rimmed with a circular or semicircular wooden frame, to which a long handle is attached at a right angle. Its size generally varied, and the size of the net and the length of the handle differed according to its purpose. It is used to scoop up trapped fish including small fish such as anchovies. In the past, stone wall fishing, a way of fishing by erecting stone walls, consisted of fishermen wading into the water at low tide and bringing up small fish including anchovies trapped inside the walls. This type of net used to scoop up fish is called jjokbaji in Jeju Island. At the damselfish fisheries in shallow water, a raft would be taken out to sea and catch damselfish using this scoop net, which is also called gukjasadul, or a ladle net, since it has a log handle like a ladle. In Gyeongsang Province, a long bamboo handle was attached onto the semicircular framed net and used it to scoop up ark shells, and the net was referred to as jjokji or ark shell jjokji. Fishing using this scoop net can be dated back to the Joseon Dynasty or before, although it has become obsolete in the present day. Nonetheless, a net with a long handle is still used at fish farms to scoop up fish. Such a net resembles or comprises a modified version of sadul used in the past.
