Tachibana Museum
Fukuoka-ken, Japan

This painting was a gift from a sympathizer to Tomoharu, who was a count and the 15th head of the Tachibana family, on his sixtieth birthday in 1917. The note on the box containing the painting says “Painting of Landscape”, however, it depicts pine trees in the foreground that filled the screen. Rather, it can be said ‘Painting of Pine Trees’. The painter is Matsufuji Sanpu who was born in Yanagawa in 1874. He studied under Kawai Gyokudo in Tokyo and became good at landscape paintings. This work shows the influences of Kawai Gyokudo’s style which is a pleasant impression with bright and clear color.
