Ercole Gigante, who was a pupil of his brother Giacinto and Achille Vianelli, and Teodoro Duclère dedicted themselves to landscape painting following the research of the School of Posillipo, inspired by the rich Mediterranean vegetation, as in Landscape near Gargnano. The view of Posillipo painted by Gigante using smooth bushstrokes communicates a sense of calm romanticism. The bright landscapes of the Campania region also inspired many foreign artists, such as the Prussian Bielocowsky who in Peasant from the Amalfi Coast creates a scene of local life portraying a young girl embellished with pearls while at work in the clear Amalfi atmosphere.
