Landscape with Bridge

Attentive to naturalistic detail and the lumisitic virtuosity learned from the master painter Antoon Sminck Pitloo, Smargiassi and Duclère both comprised an important part of the School of Posillipo. They dedicated themselves to naturalistic renderings and descriptions of the florid landscapes of the Campania Felix (fertile countryside). In Imagined Landscape Smargiassi depicts the florid and bright countryside whose perspectival structure is built through the closely observed botanical and chromatic variety of summer vegetation. Likewise in the two small oil paintings depicting Landscape with Bridge and View of Amalfi, Duclère captures the light and colors of the lush Campania countryside executed by minute and dynamic touches of the paint brush.
