Wu Hufan was born in Suzhou, Jiangsu province and lived in Shanghai. His original name was Yiyan and courtesy name Yujun, which were later changed into Wan and Dongzhuang respectively. He also used the name Qian and a signing name Chouyi. His literary name was Qianan while he signed his calligraphic and painting works with the name Hufan. He was renowned as a member of the “Three Wus and One Feng,” with the other three being Wu Daiqiu, Wu Zishen, and Feng Chaoran. After the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, he served as a member of the Preparation Committee of Shanghai Academy of Chinese Painting and the vice-chairman of the Shanghai branch of China Artists Association. Wu excelled in painting flowers, mountains and water and was also an expert in determining the authenticity of early paintings. Regarding mountain and water painting, he first drew on the “Four Wangs” (the four outstanding mountain and water painters in the Qing dynasty) and Dong Qichang, then traced back to famous painters in the Song and Yuan dynasties and finally created his own unique style.
