Front section of a marble horse, head lacking muzzle and ears, right half of chest and right shoulder missing and restored in plaster. Left leg broken off at shoulder, dowelled on separately.
Two cuttings for large clamps, one in middle of chest and the other between the fore-legs, show that the chest was made of two pieces of marble. Left leg was raised and advanced more than the right.

  • Provenance: Excavations were carried out at Lanuvium 1884-1890, directed by Sir John Savile Lumley (later Lord Savile). Before his death he arranged that the objects he recovered should be divided between the British Museum and the museum of the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society (later Leeds City Museum).
