Large Drinking Vessels, Kyoto lacquer ware

It has been confirmed that these large drinking vessels were created around 1800. Though they were re-painted a few times, these pieces retain their brilliant sheen. While Heian Period sake vessels are believed to have been either earthenware or lacquerware, the common people of the Edo Period used light-yet-durable lacquerware—that is until ceramics such as Imari ware were mass-produced and distributed. These large drinking vessels measure 53 cm, 65 cm, and 76 cm in diameter respectively from top to bottom. It would be a challenge to create cups like these today due to issues of acquiring the bare wood required.
