The Majiayao culture (3300–2000 BCE) was a group of Neolithic communities who lived primarily in the upper Yellow River region in Gansu and Qinghai, China. It represents another peak of pottery-making in that area subsequent to the Yangshao culture (5000–3000 BCE). Its painted pottery is arguably the most accomplished among Neolithic cultures in terms of quantity and level of artistry. The Majiayao potters tended to use black pigment to decorate their wares with sweeping parallel lines and dots.
