When the original mount of the Apatosaurus was updated in the 1990s, new discoveries required modification to its neck and tail. Four neck vertebrae were added, in addition to numerous thin, rod-like tail vertebrae--which lengthened the tail by about 7 meters. The tail was also suspended off the ground in a whip-like position because trackways of sauropods show no evidence that the tail dragged on the ground.
