During the reign of Phillip V, this lead was used by technicians and carpenters in shipbuilding. It is a weight held by a cord which, when dropped, is pulled to the ground by the force of gravity, forming a perfectly straight vertical line.

In the 18th century, people began to apply scientific knowledge to construction of the Spanish fleet. Many of the traditional tools used in shipbuilding were replaced with new instruments that could be used to build ships that were better equipped for combat and navigation.
