Ceramic pillows may look uncomfortable, but the soft curve and height are said to comfortably support the head and neck. This Cizhou ware pillow from the Jin Dynasty (AD 1115-1234) has a beehive peony design on it. The peony was a common design motif, symbolizing wealth, spring, and female beauty. Although ceramic pillows are no longer used today, they were used in China for approximately 1,400 years, well into the 20th century.
