Only the wine produced on these slopes had the features appreciated by the English market. To meet the new market demands, winegrowing had to expand in this region. To make its marketing easier, wine was exported from Porto, making this product from the Douro region known as Port Wine. Sales were boosted with the Methuen Treaty in 1703, according to which the reduction of taxes on this wine favoured its export. Prosperity only lasted for a while, until the 1750s, when exports became scarce (VELOSO, 2013: 19-20; PEREIRA, 2010: 220-221).
