For his European public, and for the heads of Deutsche Grammophon, Leonard Bernstein embodied a new way of living and communicating music that was universally appealing. In just a few years, the American artist had built up a tremendous catalogue, mainly with the Vienna and Israel Philharmonic Orchestras. He changed the course of classical recording, but was himself transformed in the process.
