Letter from Andrés de Mirandaola, financier of the Islas del Poniente (Islands Toward the West), to Philip II, giving an account of the various affairs relating to the expeditions that took place for the discovery of those islands: his appointment as the financier and overseer of the Royal Treasury of those islands; arrival of the armada of general Miguel López de Legazpi and observations made by navigators on this voyage; resources of the islands (gold, cinnamon, and wax); political organization of the natives; possibilities for evangelization; requirement that the land be conquered due to the belligerence of its inhabitants; Portuguese presence on the island of Bool (Bohol); attacks by the Indians of the Maluku Islands in Bohol and Macagua; expedition made together with Guido de Lavezaris to the island of Beguindanao (Mindanao?) and port of Butuan, where indians of Luzon traded, an island close to Borneo, and trading possibilities with the latter; treaty with the chief of Butuan to trade with those natives; arrival at the island of Cebu, where they fought with its inhabitants and where a Baby Jesus and a vein of iron and another of bronze were discovered, of the moment of Magellan whom those natives had killed, later establishing relations with Tupas, brother of the head of these inhabitants, and other chiefs; return to Spain of his uncle, friar Andrés de Urdaneta, together with friar Andrés de Aguirre and captains Felipe de Salcedo and Juan de Aguirre; appeal for help of the whole crew of the armada and artillery whereby favors should be given and the salary increased.
