Hanke, Lewis; Library of Congress. Hispanic Foundation. [Carta] 1942 Jan. 19,
Washington, D.C. [para] Candido Portinari, Rio de Janeiro, RJ. [inglês][datilografado]
Prezado amigo:
First of all I hope you had a pleasant journey homeward sailing through the skies nd that all the members of the Portinari bandeira arrived safely and in good health.
We have sent a set of the four photographs of your mural to a number of people in
Brazil and other parts of Latin America so that I expect your work in the Hispanic Foundation will become exceedingly well know to many people throughout Latin America.
Recently a member of the Reader’s Digest staff has inquired whether you would be interested in composing a brief essay for the back cover of the Portuguese and Spanish editions of the Reader’s Digest. These editions have a total subscription list of well over two million persons and in the past essays have been written by such persons as Henry Ford, Sinclair Lewis, General John J. Pershing, Lin Yutang and Walt Disney. The Reader’s Digest attitude on rhis back cover essay may be well judged from the following paragraph of a recent letter to me:
“This is not a commercial matter from our viewpoint, We do pay a slight honorarium. But that is only a token. The real payment come from the millions of men and women who read the back cover and thence forth feel themselves friends and admirers of the man or woman who wrote it”.
If you think that you would be interested in this matter under these conditions, will you please let me know at your earliest convenience.
Robert Smith and all your friend in the Hispanic Foundation send their cordial good wishes to you and Senhora Portinari and the menino.
Cordially yours,
Lewis Hanke
Director
