- Story: A talented and persuasive orator, Mary Livermore made an excellent living on the 19th-century lyceum circuit for more than 20 years. Livermore spoke eloquently about the need for women’s right to vote, often couching her appeals in terms of women’s special responsibilities as caregivers at home and to the nation. In her speech “The Boy of To-Day” Livermore argues that a strong nation is composed of strong men and mothers are crucial to shaping men of character. “If the ranks of manly men can be increased among us, and then be supplemented by large numbers of womanly women,--which now seems probable,--we need not fear for the future of the nation. It will outride the fiercest storms it may encounter in its pathway, and it will overcome the evil tendencies which are sure to manifest themselves.”

- Transcript:Melrose, Mass., / Oct. 20, 1883./ Dear Miss Field, / I have hardly a desirable evening left, until after Christmas – and then I go West. The best date I can offer you is Monday, Nov. 5. I enclose a circular that you may choose a lecture if the date and terms suit you. Terms $50. The lecture that I am giving most is “The Boys of Today”. It is as popular as “The Coming Man”, which I think I have given in Claremont. If I have not, I advise you to choose that. Let me hear from you as soon as possible. / Yrs. Truly, /M. D.
