A turban shell lid rest is one of the seven kinds of lid rests selected by Sen no Rikyu. Initially, a real horned turban with gold leaves pasted on the inside was used for the lid rest. But eventually, metal or ceramic horned turbans became common. It is customary to place the mouth facing upward when using it as a lid rest.
