Aside from the Chitan minority's indigenous forms, another source for Liao ceramics was the Chinese ding wares of Hebei, whose potters had included white-glazed boxes in their repertoire since the Tang period. Two other known boxes with small appliquéd roundels, one from a Liao tomb in Beijing dated to 1053 (KG 1972.3: pl. 12.2) and the other in the Taibei Palace Museum identified as Northern Song ding ware (Taibei Mus. 1987: pl. 23), affirm the eleventh-century origin of this box. These specific appliquéd roundels, however, while not found on ceramics of the Chinese ding style, decorate quite a number of Liao ware pieces.
