'Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen' premiered in 1982, together with ‘Svadebka’. It marks a turning point in Jiří Kylian’s career, as the company had just returned from Prague. This was the first time Kylián returned to Czechoslovakia, after fleeting the country during the Prague Spring in 1968. The choreography consists of five duets. The music by Gustav Mahler is characterized by nostalgia and heartbreak. 'Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen' shows the smooth fluid movement, small accents, and magnificent lifts, that are characteristic of this moment in Kylián’s career. The choreography reflects the emotions of the songs, varying between overwhelming grief and pure joy.
