Lighting the Fires of Freedom

Dr. Janet Dewart Bell, whose first nationally published essay with Josephine Hulett ran in Ms. in 1973 on women's household rights, is a social justice activist with a PhD in leadership from Antioch University. Her book, Lighting the Fires of Freedom: African American Women in the Civil Rights Movement, is a collection of oral histories of the Black women who are oft overlooked, but true leaders of, the Civil Rights Movement.
