China National Silk Museum

China National Silk Museum
Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China

This hat is designed to cover the ears. Two ribbons of damask on tabby are attached to the ear flaps, the bottoms of which are decorated with fringes made of five bunches of colored silk threads. When the ear flaps are folded up, the two ribbons can be tied with thread to the top of the hat from where they hang down. Attached to the brim are two additional ribbons which can be tied below the chin. Gold applique patterns appear on all sides of the hat. This decorative technique appeared in the late Tang and was popular in the Liao dynasty.
