The Battle of Orgreave occurred on 18 June 1984 during the 1984-5 miners' strike. The violent clash between pickets and police took place close to the site of a British Steel Corporation coking plant. The incident included charges by mounted police, missile throwing and the use of batons and shields. Arrested pickets faced charges of riot and violent disorder, however, trials collapsed due to unreliable police evidence. The Battle of Orgreave continues to be a contentious issue.
