This steam locomotive was used on Italian secondary tracks, especially in Piedmont and Lombardy. Since there was little traffic on these lines, the trains consisted of just a few cars, limited in speed in order to accommodate frequent stops. Originally these locomotive tenders were built to make up trains in railway stations, but due to their reduced fuel consumption and respectable power, they were often used for line service. In the 1930s they were replaced by gas- or fuel oil-powered railcars and locomotive engines. The 880 was used for minor service until the 1970s, and some are still in use today on short tourist routes.
