Loggerhead Turtle

It is recognisable from its serrated, beautifully painted shell and its parrot-like beak. The shell ('caretta') was often used to make spectacle frames, but it is now popular in Japan for traditional hairpins. The World Wide Fund for Nature has successfully lobbied to ban the international trade in 'caretta'.

The loggerhead turtle mainly lives in tropical areas along the coasts, where it looks for its food – like sponges.
