b. 1946, Karachi, undivided India; based in India and Europe

The multifaceted urban chaos of Lohar Chawl, a commercial locality of Mumbai, India, is captured in this deeply layered monoprint by Nalini Malani. Using a technique the artist calls “cloning”, the monoprint has been photocopied and worked over in ink, charcoal, watercolour, pen, and collage. In doing so, she records the lives and stories of those living in the area, which history often sweeps aside.
