This photograph shows Lord Richard Burdon Haldane delivering the first oration at the Birkbeck College Centenary celebrations in the Theatre at the Breams Building on 12 November 1923. The title of his speech was 'Progress in Philosophy'. Lord Richard Burdon Haldane (1865-1928) served in H.H. Asquith's government as Secretary of Sate for War and then Lord Chancellor from 1905-1915. He had a strong interest in higher education and gives his name to the Haldane Principle on research funding.
