From the Artist: One of the first things I started to see in newspapers during the outbreak, was circles on maps. Zones. The colors were red, orange and yellow. They overlapped. They got muddy when they were jumbled together. It reminded me of bombing maps, danger zones. And especially being a child of the 70’s/80’s, it reminded me of “War-games” and the nuclear threat that filled my active imagination. When I sat down to recreate the war-zones of Covid, I realized I had to fill the surrounding spaces with other colors. What started out as an attempt to re-create a diagram, failed. Because there is no such thing as empty space during a crisis. In the end, it all became a red-zone. But layered over that was love, compassion, bravery and hope. Because Love is Contagious.
