Pictured here is Lucy Burns, who threw suffrage pamphlets from this airplane as it flew over Seattle. While attending graduate school in England, Brooklyn native Burns was introduced to the militant suffragettes. She left her studies to join them—eventually meeting Alice Paul in a London police station. The two friends partnered to inject aggressive tactics into the American movement. Burns famously led the White House pickets and organized hunger strikes in prison.
