The Idol of a Secret Rite

Baths of Diocletian

Baths of Diocletian
Roma, Italy

The small gilded-bronze statue represents a male figure; his veiled body is tightly wrapped by seven spires of a snake. It was found in a sanctuary on the slopes of the Gianicolo Hill, in Rome, still covered with its votive offerings: eggs, seeds and flowers. The identity of the idol is uncertain but the type of the offerings recalls the annual cycles of nature. 4th century AD
