The Soviets used 50, 82, 107, 120, and 160mm mortars. The M1938 120mm was developed by the Soviets in 1938 and boasted superb performance during the Second World War. The 120mm mortar was one of the most effective artillery weapons of the war, able to launch 16kg shells over distances of some 6,000m. The Germans recognized the advantages of the120mm mortar and fielded units seized from the Soviets. Copies were made and deployed with German units. The 120mm mortars used by armed forces the world over are mostly based on the M1938.
The North Koreans also used the M1938 120mm mortar during the Korean War. It is mounted on a limber for easy towing behind a vehicle or armored personnel carrier.
