This “Madonna and Child” was attributed to Raphael when the museum acquired it. It appears to have been significantly repainted and was produced by Biagio d'Antonio who worked with Domenico Ghirlandaio on several occasions.
The motif on the damask curtain and the one in the bay windows provide a glimpse of a landscape, revealing the influence of the many Nordic pictures to be found in Florence in the late 15th century.
Biagio d'Antonio, an Italian painter originally from Florence, was active in Faenza between 1476 and 1483, and in 1504; and in Rome in 1481. For a long time, he was confused with Giovanni Battista Utili da Faenza.
