Christ makes a sign of benediction and holds a globe, symbolizing that he is the savior of the world. Although an infant, his torso shows hints of musculature befitting a king. The Virgin Mary’s throne takes on an architectonic mass evoking the grandeur of Rome. It is fluted, or grooved, at the back like a column, and decorated with classical scrolls and motifs on the sides.

This work was painted ca. 1490 for the Neapolitan church of San Francesco delle Monache and then passed to Santa Maria della Rotonda. The artist Cristoforo Faffeo ran a productive workshop, exporting religious paintings throughout southern Italy. Like Francesco Cicino da Caiazzo, he owes much to the major Umbrian-Roman master Pinturicchio. The hatched brushwork, particularly visible in Jesus’ face, is a technique learned from Pinturicchio.
