Benaglio was probably the artist most responsible for the diffusion of Renaissance trends in Veronese painting between 1450 and 1480. His 1462 triptych in San Bernardino is the first local response to Mantegna’s masterpiece for San Zeno of three years before. The composition is framed by a simulated marble window that opens onto a simplified stony landscape, clearly in contrast to elaborate Gothic backgrounds.
