Mafra's two bell towers include a remarkable set of 120 bronze-fused bells, ranging in weight from twelve tons to the 2,7 kilograms of high-pitched bells. The bells are organized in three distinct groups: the hour bells, the liturgical bells and the carillons. The two carillons (South and North towers) are the largest of the 18th century in the world. They were commissioned to two bell-smelters from the Netherlands: Willelm Witlockx, one of the most respected bell smelters in Antwerp and Nicolas Levache, a Liege smelter.
