In 1889 in Chicago, Dr. P. H. Cronin, a leader of the Irish-American organization Clan-na-Gael, was mysteriously murdered. His killers wanted to stop his involvement with a splinter faction of the Clan-na-Gael, which promoted Irish independence from Great Britain.
