The magnetic theodolite was an instrument used for measuring the strength of the Earth’s magnetic field. Carrying out the measurement was a complex and delicate operation and consisted of calculating the oscillation induced by the Earth’s field on a small magnetic needle. A telescope that was part of the main body allowed an absolute reference to be determined.
