These works are by artist Concha Laca, who worked at Porcelanas Bidasoa (1952-1984). As a result of her great creative flair and technical mastery, Laca was put in charge of making all kinds of decorative figures (couples in regional costumes, animals, flowers, etc.) which she designed and hand-painted herself.
In addition to her usual work, from 1955 she began to create flowers of extraordinary delicacy, like those shown in the picture. These pieces were not put up for sale; rather they were given as prestigious gifts by the company. In 1995 the Provincial Government of Gipuzkoa awarded her the title of Honoured Craftsperson of Gipuzkoa.
The creation of porcelain flowers has a long history, in factories such as the Spanish Buen Retiro (1760-1808). This was complex and delicate work that required the involvement of specialist craftspeople to model and decorate each of the flowers by hand.
