By the time of legendary painter Raja Ravi Varma's death, there had emerged in Travancore what can be described as a School of Raja Ravi Varma with many talented painters such as Mangala Bayi, Rama Varma, KR Ravi Varma, Mukundan Thampi, CN Pillai, carrying forward the tradition. Rama Warrier was one among them. Not much is known about him and when he started painting with Ravi Varma except that their families had close ties. Painting portraits of the royals, many of the artists benefited from the patronage of the Travancore Durbar.
