“The identity of the figure is a problem. If it is intended to be Christ, pointing to the book would seem to suggest the message "I am the way" (John 14:6), but there is no exact parallel for such a figure in Gothic sculpture. The pointing finger may well indicate the apostle Thomas, suggesting a comparison to Saint Thomas or Philip from the chapel at Rieux now in the Musée des Augustins, Toulouse, each of whom has a similar book (Pradalier-Schlumberger 1998, figs. 193 and 191).” (Joan A.
