Map of the northern part of miners' houses in the side ditches of the Altenwald pit. The allocation of low-cost loans from the Saar mines inspectorate resulted in real "miners' villages" being built from the mid-1850s which still characterise the region today. In contrast to large and anonymous tenements, compact private homes were built here with small gardens for growing fruit and vegetables.
