Map of Postal, Telecommunication, and Traffic Networks

Around 1905

National Palace Museum of Korea

National Palace Museum of Korea
Seoul, South Korea

This map indicates the locations of post offices, telecommunication offices for electricity and telegrams, permanent and temporary telecommunication networks, and switch centre of the Korean Empire era. The map also illustrates railways, telegram networks, telephone lines, and waterways. Considering only the Gyeongin Line (opened in September 1899) and Gyeongbu Line (opened in January 1905) are marked, without the Gyeongui Line, which opened in April 1906, the 10th year of Gwangmu, this map is presumed to have been produced between January 1905, the 9th year of Gwangmu, and April 1906. This map holds significant historic value as it one of the outcomes of the modernization policies fervently led by the Korean Empire around 1905.
