In addition to highlighted area of the Universal Postal Union, the map shows the colonial domains at the time of the map's publication: capital letters mark the British, Danish, French, Dutch, Portuguese, and Spanish territories.

The map bears the name of Berlin cartographer and publisher Julius Straube. Straube published numerous maps and plans on behalf of the Reich Post Office in Berlin. It is obvious that this map was created at the request of the highest postal authority of the German Empire.
