Map sent by Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo [latter Marquis of Pombal] to the Purveyor of the "Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro", with a catalog of "plots that produce the different qualities of wines". The Company's bylaw calls for a distinction both "complete and absolute between the wines shipped to America and other foreign nations from the Alto Douro' slopes and adjoining territories and the wines from places only suitable for local consumption, so that in turn these poor wines mean no harm to the reputation of those fully deserving by their natural goodness". As a consequence, the northern and southern banks of the river were mapped and land boundaries protected "every piece of terrain producing true shipping wines suitable for exit through the same river mouth".
