Maps, Fender Extension, Lunar Roving Vehicle, Apollo 17

This is a substitute fender extension made by astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt after the original fender on the lunar roving vehicle broke during the Apollo 17 mission in December 1972. The fender was made by taping four lunar maps together as a replacement for the broken fender to prevent large quantities of lunar soil from covering the astronauts and the vehicle while in use.Transferred to the National Air and Space Museum from NASA - Johnson Space Center in 1975.
