  • Date Created: 1818

  • Viewing Notes: Ketubbot (marriage contracts) produced in the Near East are strongly influenced by Islamic art in their lack of figurative decoration. Persia was the most important center of ketubbah illumination in the Islamic world. A popular symbol of Persia, the motif of the lions in front of the rising sun featured on this ketubbah reflects the national pride of the Jews of Isfahan, who believed they were the oldest Jewish community in the country.
